The Evolution of Taiwanese Food in Toronto
Taiwanese dining options in Toronto have grown noticeably more varied in recent years. Taiwanese food once brought to mind mainly bubble tea and a handful of snacks, but local Taiwanese restaurants have since become considerably more specialized. From carefully simmered braised beef noodle soup, to night market style intestine vermicelli, to filling everyday Taiwanese bento, the choices are broader than before. Below is a guide to 11 representative Taiwanese eateries across Toronto and Markham, including long established names and newer shops reinterpreting home style cooking, organized so you can find something by taste.
Beef Noodle and Taiwanese Noodles
Beef noodle soup and danzai noodles are among Taiwan's signature noodle dishes. The three below represent North York, Markham, and a Tainan style brand.
- 579 Taiwan Beef Noodle House: Located in North York, specializing in beef noodle soup with both tendon and meat, alongside Taiwanese braised platters. The decor is simple, and the braised items come with the sweetish soy paste common in Taiwan.
- Mei Nung Beef Noodle House: Located in First Markham Place in Markham, one of the longer running Taiwanese noodle shops in the area. Its main draw is braised three treasure noodles, and it also serves Taiwanese fried stinky tofu with sweet and sour pickles, which is uncommon locally.
Taiwanese Fried Chicken and Pork Chop Rice
Fried chicken and fried pork chop sit at the heart of Taiwan's night market and bento culture. The four below each have their own background.
- Monga Fried Chicken: A chain originating in Taipei's Wanhua district (Monga), specializing in Taiwanese pepper fried chicken. The Toronto franchise follows the marinade and recipe standards of the Taiwan headquarters, and the brand is preparing to enter the Calgary market.
- J&G Fried Chicken Canada: Founded on Jiguang Street in Taichung in 1973, it is one of Taiwan's established fried chicken brands. Signatures include its namesake fried chicken, crispy garlic king oyster mushrooms, and cuttlefish tempura, all fried to order.
- Taipei Chin Yuan Pai Ku: Carrying on the flavor of a long standing shop from Taipei's Ximending, its pork chops are marinated with five spice, garlic, and other seasonings before frying, without a thick batter. Its mains are fried pork chop rice and fried chicken leg rice.
- Hualien Tai Ping Hsiang BBQ: Run by an immigrant family from Hualien, Taiwan, its mains include fried pork chop, salt and pepper chicken bento, and Taiwanese cold noodles. Its operation and menu closely follow the format of traditional Taiwanese bento (cafeteria style) shops.
Taiwanese Snacks, Braised Dishes, and Stir-Fry
From home style snacks to stir-fry, the shops below reflect different sides of everyday Taiwanese eating.
- Wei's Taiwanese Food: Founded by an early Taiwanese immigrant family, it focuses on traditional Taiwanese snacks such as pig blood cake and oyster vermicelli, in a home cooked style.
- HOJA: Created by the Taiwanese team behind local tea brand Formocha, it evolved from an earlier Taiwanese braised food concept and now focuses on Taiwanese vermicelli and salt and pepper chicken, also offering minced pork rice and sweet potato fries.
- Papa Chang's: Located in Markham and founded by a Taiwanese owner, it specializes in egg crepes, intestine vermicelli, and braised pork rice, using fairly traditional Taiwanese methods.
- Hoja Lamb Clay Pot & Stir-Fry: Run by the same team as HOJA, it brings Taiwan's rapid stir-fry dining culture and a winter only skin on lamb clay pot to Toronto, focusing on high heat wok cooking and Hakka stir-fry.
Taiwanese Breakfast
Taiwanese breakfast is relatively rare locally. The shop below is based downtown.
- Sunny Taiwanese Breakfast: Located on Bay Street downtown, it is one of the few spots in Toronto dedicated to Taiwanese breakfast, with egg crepes, sticky rice rolls, and Taiwanese milk tea as its mains.
