Flaky Pastry or Shortcrust Pastry?
In Toronto, there is a friendship test called: "Do you eat flaky pastry or shortcrust pastry?".
Recently, we hosted the "2025 People's Choice Toronto's Strongest Series" on Threads. When it came to the Egg Tart Edition, the battle was practically a world war. Although everyone has different tastes, after a fierce battle, a member of the "royal family" finally broke through the siege and won the championship throne!
If this bakery isn't on your 2026 Wishlist yet, please update it immediately.
The Undisputed Champion: Eggtart Queen

This time, the People's Choice champion was won by Eggtart Queen! 🎉
Why did they win? With a name like "Queen", they must have the strength to back it up. They are most famous for their incredibly rich, multi-layered handmade flaky pastry.
Texture: When you bite into it, it's not "crispy", it's "melt-in-your-mouth". The layers of flaky pastry are so distinct that it feels like eating air, yet it is full of buttery aroma.
Egg Filling: The sweetness is just right, not overwhelmingly sweet, with a rich egg flavor. When eaten hot, the egg filling is still jiggly!
Eating Risk: You must be mentally prepared when eating this egg tart—you will definitely get crumbs all over yourself! But as a Foodie, this is called the "price of happiness".
Although the price is a bit more premium compared to ordinary bakeries, as the ceiling of Toronto's egg tart scene, their championship win is absolutely well-deserved.
Strongest Nominees List (Categorized Quick Guide)
There is only one champion, but there are so many delicious egg tarts! The following 8 nominees are all hidden gems. To make it easier for everyone to explore in 2026, I have categorized them for you. Let's see which faction you belong to?
🥟 Dim Sum Restaurant Faction (A Must-Order for Yum Cha)
What's the difference between going for dim sum without ordering egg tarts and going to a Cha Chaan Teng without drinking milk tea? The egg tarts at these restaurants win by being hot and fresh!
Flo Tea Room: A dim sum hotspot in Markham. Their egg tarts are famous for their large size and smooth egg filling, definitely a must-order item.
Casa Victoria: Produced by a high-end restaurant with stable quality. The flaky pastry is very delicately made, so you won't lose face when treating guests to a meal.
Lei Garden: Old-school restaurant flavor, a favorite among many veteran foodies, with a particularly rich egg flavor.
Elegance Chinese Cuisine (雅閣餐廳): Also a strong contender, locals praise it after trying.
🍞 Hong Kong-style Bakeries / Old Brands (Nostalgia and Cost-Performance)
Buy half a dozen when passing by, this is the authentic Hong Kong style!
Aromaz: Extremely high cost-performance! Many people say it's a hidden master, and the shortcrust pastry is very crumbly.
Fujisana: Scarborough locals definitely know it! The egg tarts are insanely huge; eating one will make you half full. A great choice for value and size.
🍰 New School & Specialty Baking (Focusing on Both Photos and Taste)
You & Me Bakery and Coffee Shop: Besides traditional egg tarts, their other baked goods are also excellent. Perfect for hipsters to enjoy a coffee and a tart.
Panash Bakery: A Japanese-style bakery. Although it's Japanese, the egg tarts are very delicately made with a particularly fragrant butter flavor, suitable for friends who prefer a light texture.
Conclusion
Whether you belong to the "Flaky Pastry Faction" or the "Shortcrust Pastry Faction", this Toronto egg tart list is enough to keep you eating for a whole year! If you think "Eggtart Queen" is well-deserved, or if you have a better Hidden Gem and think we missed out (for example, which Portuguese tart is the world's best?), let me know immediately!
